Kane County Health Department proactively addresses obesity
The Kane County Health Department recently awarded grants to implement the Fit Kids 2020 Plan. Funding is being made available through the Kane County Health Department to implement interventions that will bring about a reversal in childhood obesity within Kane County. These interventions will create local systems, environmental and policy change as outlined in the Fit Kids 2020 Plan. These grants will address one of the six key threats to community health identified in the Kane County 2012-2016 Community Health Improvement Plan - obesity. Draft GO TO 2040 Plan Update Available for Public Comments
Public Open House To Be Held at the KC Government Center
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is in the midst of updating the GO TO 2040 Plan and concurrently reviewing the Draft FFY 2014-2019 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) . The TIP is one of the short-term implementation tools for the GO TO 2040 Plan update. Both of these draft documents will be available for public comment until  August 1, 2014. CMAP will hold a Public Open House in the Kane County Government Center Auditorium on July 15th to allow local stakeholders to comment and receive feedback on these drafts. This Open House will feature posters and plan update materials for review. Comment cards will be available to provide input and CMAP staff will be on hand to answer questions.

Longmeadow Parkway Bridge Corridor
Strategic Kane County Transportation Improvement Moves Forward
The Illinois Department of Transportation and the County of Kane recently signed a Letter of Intent which addresses the State's continuing support and partnership in the Longmeadow Parkway Bridge Corridor. The $40 million in state funding for the Longmeadow Parkway bridge project will assist in funding three state highway intersections and will help to move this important highway and bridge corridor forward. In addition, the Kane/Kendall Council of Mayors has committed $5 million in Surface Transportation Program funds toward this project, bringing an important boost to the project's funding needs. The bridge across the Fox River will connect Huntley and Randall Roads- both County Highways, to State Routes 31, 25 and 62, alleviating the congestion experienced at the existing river crossings in the Northern portion of Kane County. The construction cost for the project is estimated at $100 million, and will be funded with a combination of toll revenue, local, state and federal funds. The development of the Longmeadow Parkway Bridge project has been a collaborative effort between the State of Illinois, Kane County and local governmental agencies, including ten municipalities in the area. Phase II Engineering is currently underway and construction of the bridge could begin sometime in late 2015.

Kane County Health Department Receives Perfect Score on Annual Review
The Local Technical Assistance Review (LTAR) is the annual audit of the emergency plans that Kane County Health Department develops in concert with its partners to ensure the county is prepared for all types of public health hazards. The latest review was conducted in February and the Department was recently notified it received a perfect 100 points out of a possible 100. From natural disasters like
 flooding to influenza pandemics and biological terrorist acts, health departments are required to have plans in place to respond to these events and provide Kane County residents with medicine and supplies. The reviewers look for evidence of trainings, drills, exercises and real-life events that the emergency response team has experienced. The Emergency Response Coordinator, Jennifer Fearday, is responsible for writing and updating various plans and working with partners to review and improve upon them. After practicing the plans through drills and exercises, an "After Action Report" is completed which highlights the strengths and weaknesses encountered during the drill/exercise and lists corrective actions that are incorporated into plan updates. The Health Department learned many lessons when it established mass vaccination clinics during the H1N1 influenza outbreak in the autumn of 2009 and current plans reflect changes based on the lessons learned.

Grant Funding Available for Bicycle-Related Improvements
PeopleforBikes is now accepting grant proposals for the Fall 2014  Cycle of their Grant Program. PeopleforBikes accepts grant applications from non-profit and government agencies and deals with projects and programs that advance bicycling. Requests must support a specific project or program; they do not grant funds for general operating costs.
